Brake Fluid: what to check before you buy
- DOT 4 is the usual Mercedes-Benz specification; your owner's manual names the grade for your car.
- Brake fluid absorbs moisture from the air, and water lowers its boiling point.
- DOT 4 and DOT 5.1 are both glycol-based and can be mixed. Never mix either with silicone-based DOT 5.
- Mixing grades dilutes the benefit, so a full flush beats a top-up.
